An email list is no more than a list of emails of clients, potential clients, followers, blog readers, etc. that are interested in what you’re doing in your business.

It’s very difficult to get people to sign up for a newsletter, although people typically sign up for an email mailing list when they're offered some sort of incentive, something like downloadable content, free pieces of training, demos, news, updates, etc.

An email list is a direct way to communicate with your audience and sell directly to people that are already interested in what you’re doing. With an email list you’ll be able to:

  • Build trust and long-term relationships with your audience

  • Connect directly with your potential clients

  • Increase your sales volume

An opt-in is some sort of incentive something like downloadable content, free pieces of training, demos, news, updates, etc. that you offer to your audience in exchange for their personal information (usually their email address).

The way you deliver your opt-in could be a downloadable PDF, a worksheet, workshop, live training, or even a free product.

You need to create sign-up sections strategically because before anyone decides to sign up for any opt-in they need to know exactly what you have to offer and why that offer will create value for them.

If you want visitors to turn into potential clients who are scrolling through your website to want to sign up for your email list, captivating sign-up sections are your greatest opportunity.

You should use the sign-up sections to capture your visitor's attention with a bold call-to-action and enticing offer they just cannot pass on. With this, we're saying that you should never ask a visitor to “subscribe for news” or to “join your mailing list”. In our case, we offer free training as an opt-in.

 

2. Create Pop-Ups and Announcement Bars

Similar to the sign-up sections, pop-up banners and announcement bars are another way to get your visitor’s attention to opt-in for your free offer. 

A pop-up banner is great because it's often one of the first things people see when they land on your website. You have different options to display a pop-up, it can be in the form of a pop-up bar that covers the whole screen, or a pop-up window that appears as visitors are scrolling.

An announcement bar on the other hand is a more subtle way to remind your visitors that you have something to offer. The great thing about having an announcement bar on top of your website is that is a constant reminder to opt-in for what you're offering.

If you offer multiple opt-ins (free training, challenge, downloadable material, etc.) make it easy for people to find all of them by creating a dedicated freebies page on your website and adding it to the main navigation menu.

Having a dedicated page for freebies is a good way to direct people to your site over time. The more content you offer on that page, the more your audience will see you as a resource, and the stronger your relationship will become.

On this page, you should include a short description of each freebie, what problem do they solve, and a teaser of what people are going to receive once they decide to give you their email address.
